Young people at the Pikangikum First Nation, are taking their own lives at a shocking rate – by sniffing.

EDAI is convinced, that these tragic events, are linked to the incredible absence of opportunities to work: The unemployment rate is around 90%!

But there could be more permanent jobs associated with the Whitefeather Forest Inititiative, the Pikangikum-owned corporation for logging on its own territory.

The Whitefeather Forest Initiative wants to give young people an opportunity of culturally appropriate employment. And work means hope for a better life...more

Pikangikum First Nation – more than one problem to solve  

Headlines in Canadian Media:
At the end of August 2011, the Office of the Chief Coroner for the Provincei of Ontario, Canada released the Death Review of the Youth Suicides at the Pikangikum First Nation 2006 – 2008. Within 3 years 16 children and youth between the ages of 10-19 died as a result of suicide in the community of Pikangikum. “The Office of the Chief Coroner has observed, with increasing alarm, the rising toll of First Nation teenage death in Northern Ontario youth living on reserve”.  more…
